Famous Mo #30

Movember the 30th! And so to the final famous mo in my daily mo series for the month. Since I started with an NZ legend, it’s only proper that I finish with another one!

Mo #30: Willie Apiata

Bill Henry “Willie” Apiata VC is a Corporal in the New Zealand Special Air Service and is the first and only recipient of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand – received for bravery under fire in Afghanistan in 2004. In addition to being a celebrated hero, he was also voted NZ’s most trusted person in 2008.

Famous Mo #29

The penultimate mo in my daily mo series for Movember.

Mo #29: Merv Hughes

I guess it’s only fitting to feature Merv Hughes since my own mo has been likened to Merv’s by colleagues! Merv was an Australian cricketer in the late 80’s and early 90’s playing 53 Tests and 33 ODI’s. If you remember seeing him in action you’ll no doubt recall he had a large, ah, presence on the field! 😉 – a point not lost in Wikipedia: “Hughes was a notorious consumer of alcohol and food… having always been rather overweight”. Gotta love the “see also” entry there: “Sledging (cricket)”. 😀

Mo #26: Will Smith

Will Smith started out as a rapper in the late 80’s under the name The Fresh Prince before launching his acting career as the star of the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. Since then he’s starred in plenty of blockbuster films including Independence Day, Men in Black, Enemy of the State, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness and I Am Legend among others. According to Wikipedia he turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix and is President Barack Obama’s choice of actor to play him if a film is made about his life!

Famous Mo #25

Daily mo #25 for Movember is another toothbrush moustache:

Mo #25: Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin first wore this style of moustache as part of his Little Tramp costume – before that other guy came along and pretty much ruined the style for good. He started acting during the silent film years in the 1910’s and continued well into the “talkies” and beyond with his final film appearance in 1967. In 1975 at the age of 85 he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.

The Flying Circus was of course Monty Python’s Flying Circus that John Cleese was a member of in the late 60’s. He subsequently went on to co-write and star in Fawlty Towers – the TV series for which he is perhaps best known and was rated #1 in the British Film Institute’s 100 Greatest British TV programmes. He has also appeared in numerous films including two James Bond films, two Harry Potter films, and three Shrek films.
