“007 seven on an island populated exclusively by women? We won’t see him till dawn!” – Q.
Octopussy (1983) is the 6th film in which Roger Moore takes on the 007 role, equalling the number starring Sean Connery. The plot this time has Bond investigating a jewel scam by a Russian General, played by Steven Berkoff (familiar as Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop), which leads 007 to uncover a plot to detonate a nuclear bomb in west Germany (framed as an accident) to force disarmament of the west – super cold war stuff!
The locations for the film include East and West Germany, with one scene taking place at Checkpoint Charlie – the famous crossing point between East and West Berlin.
Memorable name, average movie. While the film has some good stunts on a train and plane, Bond appearing as a clown in a circus and wearing an ape suit at another point, both provide some cringe factor that was probably unnecessary. Rotten Tomatoes is harsh on this one, giving it a “Rotten” rating with 36% – a little too harsh in my opinion. IMDB‘s 6.5 is a little more in line with my view – not as good as some previous Moore outings.
One more from Moore, then we hit a new Bond for #15…
